The 4+1 Keys To OA Successful Online Business – Part 4
I’m blogging, writing articles and I’m using social media. I’m building relationships with others, I’m giving value and I’m positioning myself in the marketplace but I’m still not making any money! What do I do now?
It is easy at times to feel like you are putting in a lot of hard work but not seeing results. It’s at times like this that many people give up. They say that people often give up just at a point, that had they continued, would have taken them to success.
When you feel this way, go back to my blog: The Suddenly Syndrome, stay connected with people who will encourage you, get out your mind map of your vision and see yourself having reached your goal and imagine how it’s going to feel. Just keep going!
If you have been carrying out the assignments I’ve suggested you have been helping to drive traffic to your website – and ultimately to your business. This is vital and related to the 4th Key to a successful online business – namely building a list.
“The Money Is In The List”
Internet Marketers Mantra
Once you get into the whole making money online world you are going to religiously hear the mantra – “The Money Is In The List.” The idea behind this is that as you drive traffic, you need to find a way to capture their names – or build a list.
By capturing the names of people of visit your website/blog, they are giving you permission to contact them in future. It’s a way to stay connected with them, keep them up on any news, offer them more free value products and most importantly to sell your products and services to them.
Do you remember we spoke about how your website is your shop window and your job is to make it so appealing that people want to come into your shop? Once the customer opts in – they are inside your shop and they are one step closer to becoming a customer who buys from your “shop.”
Now, the easiest way to get a customer into your “shop” is to offer a free product. You can create something yourself or you can give someone else’s product away. On The Singles Gym site, for example I offer a free – 10 part series e-course that I wrote. Each week the customer gets an e-course over 10 weeks. If you look on this blog I offer Alex Jeffreys’ List Building Programme.
You will notice that in order to get these products, you have to fill in a few details – this is called an opt in form. By giving their details, the customer is opting in to your list. This is what the process of list building is all about. Without a list of people you cannot sell anything. It’s no good having products or services but no list.
What you need to remember is that people who opt in to your list are doing so because they like you, they like what you offer and they trust you. These are exactly the kind of people you want because they will eventually buy from you too.
“If You Think Making Money Is The Hard Part You’re Wrong -
Once You’ve Got Your List, The Money Is Easy”
Alex Jeffreys (MarketingWithYou)
A Word Of Caution – Don’t Be A Jerk! Here is where a lot of people make a huge mistake. They go out and use all kinds of scrupulous methods to try and build their lists. On Alex’s course, we discovered that one of his students was visiting all our blogs and making lovely comments and asking us to link to his blog (another way to drive traffic to your site). What we discovered, however, is that he was saying exactly the same thing about everyone’s site – he was basically doing a copy and paste job. What a jerk! As soon as he was found out, he lost all credibility in an instant.
What you need to understand is that you don’t just want anybody on your list – you want people who are interested in the solution you offer them and who like and trust you. You are better off having 1,000 people on your list who are into what you offer than 10,000 who aren’t interested in you or what you offer.
You will find all kinds of “build your list quick “schemes on offer. They promise to share their strategies to help you build a large list by targeting other bloggers for example and targeting people who use social media such as facebook and twitter users. There is a role as long as you don’t end up being a jerk – be genuine, have integrity and offer true value. If you end up being a jerk – you are going to hurt your business massively!
Remember: Don’t chase the money – build relationships, add value, position yourself and build your list.

By Becoming More Interested In Other People
Than You Can in Two Years
By Trying To Get Them Interested In You”

Great informative post which is all too true. Much like Alex said on the coaching call last night, you need to go back to basics and consolidate and re-focus.
We have all learnt so much and done so much that it is disappointing not to see immediate reward but we must keep the long term goal in sight and consider that we are building a strong foundation whilst learning along the way.
All the best
