4+1 Keys To A Successful Online Business – Part 3
Adding value was the second key to online success that we thought about in my last blog. If you keep this intention in the back of your mind, you engage the creative side of your thinking and ideas will start coming your way. Adding value also directly relates to the third key of online success – positioning yourself or gaining social proof in your niche market.
You want to be seen as the expert in your niche – and one who is credible and can be trusted. To do this you have to position yourself and stand out above others who may be in the same niche or business.
Social Proof – Two Tools
The First Tool for positioning yourself in your niche or business is through blogging. The more you blog and write about your expertise the more you create social proof in people’s eyes. As a newbie, you may be a bit confused about what a blog is – I certainly was. The term “blog” is simply derived from the word “web log.” It’s a log or journal that you write online. That’s it – that’s all it is. That is what I a doing with now. I’m writing a log or journal about my internet marketing coaching journey – I’m just doing it online as opposed to writing it on paper.
“Don’t Get It Right, Just Get It Going”
Alex Jeffrey’s (MarketingWithYou)
If you have never done this before, the idea of writing a blog may seem a step too far out of your comfort zone. You may find all kinds of objections coming up in your head:
- I’m not a writer
- I don’t know how to write a blog
- Who will read what I write anyway?
- What if people don’t like or don’t agree with what I write?
- I don’t know how to set up a blog.
- It’s going to cost a lot of money to set up a blog site
To be blunt and honest – If you allow those doubts to win, you might as well not bother with an online business. Learning involves stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. The more you do this, however, the more confident you become, the easier it gets and the more fun you have.
The Perfectionist Trap
Throughout the coaching course, Alex reminds us over and over again that you don’t have to get it right, just get it out there. What he means by that is – your blogs don’t have to be absolutely perfect before you get them out there. You can always go back later and polish a blog up.
If you have a tendency to perfectionism- beware! I have known people who have great content that they could easily create into products and sell but it’s never ‘perfect’ enough, in their eyes, so they don’t get it out there. I know of one woman, for example, who has been setting up her online business for over two years. She has lots of ideas, writes a lot but because it’s never perfect enough, she doesn’t get it out there. Needless to say, she isn’t making any money whatsoever. It’s an easy trap to fall into. You have been warned J!
So, if you have never blogged before and if you want a successful online business:
- You are going to have to learn to set up a blog.
- You are just going to have to heed the famous words of the Nike advert and “Just do it!” Start writing.
Secrets You Need To Know
Once you start writing blogs, it does get easier. As I’ve said before, I always create a simple mindmap of what I’m going to write before I start writing. You can do that the old fashioned way on paper or by using a simple tool such as MindMeister which is free .
Just start documenting your own learning journey and have these questions in the back of your mind as you write:
- What are you learning to do?
- What are you trying?
- How is that for you – easy or difficult?
- How is what you are doing working?
- What are you discovering?
To help encourage you, even more, to start blogging I want to share some really cool secrets about the power of blogging with you:
- You can blog for FREE
- Google loves blogs – the more you write, the more google picks you up
- The more google picks you up, the more people read your blogs
- The more people that read your blogs, the more potential customers you will have who will want to buy your products/services because:
- You give value in your blogs
- You gain credibility
- You position yourself as an expert
Blogging really has to be part of your overall marketing plan with your online business. Think of it this way. Your business is like a shop on the high street. There are lots of other shops on the high street and your job is to make sure your window display stands out above all the other shop windows. Your blog is you window display.
If your window display stands out, more people will come into your shop. Then they get to know you, the shop owner, who they like and trust and bingo they buy from you. And they will come back to you and buy again. Can you now understand the importance of blogging if you have an online business?
And here is the best secret of all – and it’s ingenious in my view: If you keep a copy of all your blogs in a file, within a short time you can create your first very own product – your first e-book – that you can sell. How cool is that!
The Second Tool to creating social proof way is through association. When you start your online business it is easy to get overwhelmed by the competition and to wonder in despair how on earth your voice will be heard above the others.
One way Alex suggests and which good marketers do in the ‘real world’ is through the process of association. When your name gets linked with someone well known or famous people position you higher. That’s why authors get endorsements from well known people for their books. People are more likely to buy their book because their name is linked with someone famous.
If you look at my other blog – TheSinglesGym, you’ll notice the magazine covers on the top right that I have been featured in. Because these are big national magazines, I gain credibility and status by being associated with them. In fact, when I spoke with a marketing expert about how to market my new book , the magazines on my website was what she first noticed and commented on.
If you look at this website I have pictures of myself with well known people. First there is Brian Tracy who is a guru from the USA, and who I had the absolute joy of meeting in London earlier this year. Then there is Alex Jeffrey’s himself, who I met a couple of years ago when he was just starting out, but who now is referred to as a guru here in the UK . And finally a photo of Tom Beale, who I met on an internet marketing cruise in January of this year. He is a well known internet marketer in the USA and works together with Mike Filsaime – one of the big internet marketing guns in the states. By associating with these people, I create social proof and my position in my niche market is elevated in people’s eyes.
A word of caution here: Don’t Kiss Butt! You will be found out and once you get a bad name, word gets around very quickly – that’s the downside of the power of the internet.
So when rubbing shoulders with the guru’s remember the two first secrets to online success and apply them: build relationships and add value to them and their business. Later on down the line they will want to help you, work with you or be connected to you.
What Next?
You may not realise it but you are actually participating in a free coaching course by reading these blogs – these courses cost anywhere from £2,000 – £5,000 and more. You’re getting the coaching for free. You can never argue that you didn’t get the opportunity to create an online business – please use this chance wisely.
If you follow what I suggest, you can start building your online business – either as a full time business or alongside your day job.
So far you should have:
- Thought about your online business and ‘mapped’ it out
- Opened a twitter and facebook account
- Set up your blog
- Start writing your blog – just document what you are learning, what you are trying and how it works or doesn’t work.
I’d like to ask you a favour so that I can help you even more:
- Let me know how it’s going for you.
- Let me know when you have started your twitter account and facebook fan page and we can connect.
- Let me know the name of your blogsite so I can start reading your blogs and make links to mine.
- Make comments on what you have found helpful in my blogs and what information you want more of from me.
I look forward to hearing from you!!
Hello and Welcome!
Welcome To My Internet Marketing Journey!
How It All Started
I’ve been on an amazing journey the last couple of years learning all about how to make money online.
I’m a psychologist and a life/relationship coach. About 4 years ago, I made the leap from being full time employed to self employed. It was a scary time for me but once I did it I felt liberated. I now had more control of my life and time, I worked less and made more money.
It dawned on me however, that if I were ill and couldn’t see my clients – I wasn’t going to get paid. I began wondering about how I could also start creating passive income. The dream of making money while you sleep had actually been at the back of my mind for a long time but really came to the forefront once I was self-employed.
I didn’t have a clue how to make it happen, and then one day – I don’t even know how it happend – but I came across a website: www.TheMoneyGym.com I went to a one day seminar hosted by them called “Let’s Talk Money” and that was it – I left that seminar knowing who I wanted as a mentor.
So two years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed of starting an online business and now, thanks to the mentor, Nicola Cairncross, I have an online business for singles: www.TheSinglesGym.com What’s really exciting is that recently I was offered a publishing contract – how it came about is another story….. So I’m about to be a published author for the first time in my life. How cool is that!!
From here I got really interested in the whole area of weath creation and specifically how to create wealth online. And that’s really my reason for being here. I have had an amazing journey the past two years and it just keeps getting better and more fun and I’d like to take you on YOUR journey of a lifetime.
The Journey Continues – An Invitation For YOU…..
I’ve recently started another coaching programme with Alex Jeffrey’s of www.MarketingWithYou.com One of the first homework tasks he suggested was to start a personal blog. I didn’t get it right away until I listened to the first coaching call and then it made sense!
By sharing that with you what I’ve learned – both what i did wrong and what I got right, I’m hoping to help start your journey about how you can make money online so that you can take charge of your life, make your dreams come true, live the life you want!
The advantage I have is that I’ve immersed myself in this for the past two years so I know more than you might know, but at the same time I’m also still new enough that I remember all the mistakes I made and think about what I would have done differently. I’ve also learned to distinguish the “good guys” from the “bad guys” and want to share that with you too. That’s the purpose of this blog – so thank you Nicola for getting me started on the whole internet journey and thank you Alex for taking me further into the journey!
‘ll be writing quite frequently so you might want to subscribe to my blog using the RSS feed.
